Automotive Fantasists Parse Their Fantasies

Porsche-Mission-E-1

Concept cars don”t have to meet crash-test or emission standards. They can be made of cotton batting and OLED film, covered in hard-shell fructose. They just need to make a statement, and to communicate the weird ideas of advanced design teams: daydreamers and windmill tippers to a one.

We spoke to these fantasists-in-chief from Bugatti, Mercedes, Porsche, and many others in Frankfurt, and had them walk us through their crazed creations.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is less a spiritual heir to the charming Italian boat-tailed roadsters of the 1960s and 70s, and more like a bargain 21st century exotic, useful for melting your face (and your scalp).

Some Big News (For Me)

The Drive

I have some exciting news.

I’ve decided to accept a position as Writer-At-Large with the forthcoming Time Inc. online automotive publication The Drive. I will be covering the intersection of the automobile and contemporary culture, focusing on art, architecture, books, design, and my usual celebrity nonsense, as well as writing about incipient vehicular trends and the collectible car market, producing lengthy features, and doing the occasional new car review.

I’m sad to say goodbye to all of the wonderful automotive and mens magazines I’ve had the privilege of writing for, but am thrilled at this new opportunity, and excited to work with the stellar team being assembled. And you’ll still be able to find my work at luxury lifestyle publications like Vanity Fair, Departures, and Showboats International.

I look forward to continuing to plague you with my updates. Unsubscribe at any time.
